Everything You Need to Know Before Your First Heated Yoga Class
Thinking about trying hot yoga but not sure what to expect? You’re not alone. At Yoga London in Idaho Falls, we often hear from students who are curious about the heat, the humidity, and how it all works. This guide answers some of the most common questions about hot yoga and yoga in general—so you can step onto your mat with confidence.
Is Yoga a Religion?
No. While yoga has ancient roots connected to various spiritual traditions, it is not a religion. Yoga is best understood as a holistic practice—a way of living that promotes a healthy mind in a healthy body. Anyone, regardless of faith or belief system, can practice yoga.
What Is Hot Yoga?
Hot yoga is a sequence of yoga postures practiced in a heated environment. The warmth allows your muscles to stretch safely and deeply, improving flexibility while helping to prevent injury. The heat also increases circulation, promotes detoxification through sweat, and helps you burn more calories—creating a powerful, full-body workout.
Why Use Heat and Humidity?
Heat and humidity help protect muscles, allowing for a greater range of motion and deeper stretches. The elevated temperature also enhances cardiovascular activity and supports detoxification as you sweat. Sweating boosts energy, improves circulation to muscles and organs, and helps release built-up toxins and waste products, leaving you feeling lighter and refreshed.
How Should I Prepare for a Hot Yoga Class?
Hydration is key—drink plenty of water before, during, and after class. Avoid large meals for at least three hours beforehand. If it’s your first time, arrive 10–15 minutes early to check in, set up your mat, and give your body a few moments to adjust to the heat. This quiet time can help you center yourself before practice begins.
What Should I Bring to Class?
Bring plenty of water, your yoga mat, and a towel. Most importantly, bring yourself and an open mind. Simply showing up is the first step toward improving both your physical and mental well-being. Props such as blocks and straps are available at the studio if you’d like to use them during your practice.
What’s Basic Yoga Class Etiquette?
Reserve your spot ahead of time and cancel at least two hours in advance if you can’t attend. Remove your shoes before entering the studio and silence your phone. Arrive 5–10 minutes early, and once inside, honor the calm atmosphere by keeping conversations to a minimum. Respect your fellow yogis’ space, don’t skip savasana, and always listen to your body. If you have any injuries or medical conditions, please let your instructor know before class.
What If I’m Not Flexible Enough for Hot Yoga?
Flexibility is not a requirement—it’s a result. Saying you can’t do yoga because you’re not flexible is like saying you can’t take a shower because you’re too dirty. Yoga meets you where you are. With consistency, patience, and an open heart, your strength and mobility will naturally improve over time.
